### FAQ
2023-02-17 21:31:57 +00:00
* What should I do if I already have a pre-existing neovim configuration?
2024-03-08 20:26:32 +00:00
* You should back it up and then delete all associated files.
2024-03-21 19:47:55 +00:00
* This includes your existing init.lua and the neovim files in `~/.local`
2024-03-27 10:18:17 +00:00
which can be deleted with `rm -rf ~/.local/share/nvim/` or their
windows counterparts in `AppData\Local\nvim-data`
2024-03-06 06:55:22 +00:00
* Can I keep my existing configuration in parallel to kickstart?
2024-03-21 19:47:55 +00:00
* Yes! You can use [NVIM_APPNAME ](https://neovim.io/doc/user/starting.html#%24NVIM_APPNAME )`=nvim-NAME`
to maintain multiple configurations. For example, you can install the kickstart
configuration in `~/.config/nvim-kickstart` and create an alias:
2024-03-06 06:55:22 +00:00
```sh
alias nvim-kickstart='NVIM_APPNAME="nvim-kickstart" nvim'
```
2024-03-21 19:47:55 +00:00
When you run Neovim using `nvim-kickstart` alias it will use the alternative
2024-03-27 10:18:17 +00:00
config directory and the matching local directory `~/.local/share/nvim-kickstart` .
2024-03-06 06:55:22 +00:00
You could also run your configuration inline, for example in Windows Powershell:
```pwsh
$env:NVIM_APPNAME = 'nvim-kickstart'; nvim
```
2024-07-25 18:34:16 +00:00
You can apply both of these approaches to any Neovim
distribution that you would like to try out.
2023-02-17 21:31:57 +00:00
* What if I want to "uninstall" this configuration:
2024-09-24 15:06:14 +00:00
* See [lazy.nvim uninstall ](https://lazy.folke.io/usage#-uninstalling ) information

After installing all the dependencies continue with the [Install Kickstart ](#Install-Kickstart ) step.
#### Windows Installation

2024-03-08 20:26:32 +00:00
Installation may require installing build tools and updating the run command for `telescope-fzf-native`
2023-02-17 21:31:57 +00:00
2023-04-13 13:34:27 +00:00
See `telescope-fzf-native` documentation for [more details ](https://github.com/nvim-telescope/telescope-fzf-native.nvim#installation )
2023-02-17 21:31:57 +00:00
This requires:
2024-03-08 20:26:32 +00:00
- Install CMake and the Microsoft C++ Build Tools on Windows
2023-02-17 21:31:57 +00:00
2024-03-27 10:18:17 +00:00
Using this, you can change some plugin configurations such as `telescope-fzf-native` to use `cmake` :
2023-02-17 21:31:57 +00:00
```lua
2023-02-19 20:32:15 +00:00
{'nvim-telescope/telescope-fzf-native.nvim', build = 'cmake -S. -Bbuild -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release & & cmake --build build --config Release & & cmake --install build --prefix build' }
2023-02-17 21:31:57 +00:00
```

Alternatively, one can install gcc and make which don't require changing the config,
2024-03-06 06:55:22 +00:00
the easiest way is to use choco:
1. install [chocolatey ](https://chocolatey.org/install )
either follow the instructions on the page or use winget,
run in cmd as **admin** :
```
winget install --accept-source-agreements chocolatey.chocolatey
```
2. install all requirements using choco, exit previous cmd and
2024-03-08 20:26:32 +00:00
open a new one so that choco path is set, and run in cmd as **admin** :
2024-03-06 06:55:22 +00:00
```
choco install -y neovim git ripgrep wget fd unzip gzip mingw make
```
